Henley-on-Thames Town Council Cemetery and Columbarium

Just on the edge of Henley, where it meets the beautiful Chiltern hills, is the Fairmile Cemetery, which has provided a tranquil and picturesque place of remembrance since 1868.

Fairmile Cemetery and Columbarium

Its two flint flushwork chapels are still in use, with one available for services, and the other recently renovated into a columbarium, with niches available to buy for the keeping and display of urns.

There are a number of burial options available, and we would be happy to discuss your requirements with you.

We are accepting expressions of interest for a service leasing Columbarium niches for the interment of ashes at the Grade II Listed non-conformist Chapel at Fairmile Cemetery.

Fairmile Columbarium

A Columbarium is a structure designed to hold cremation urns.  The term derives from the Latin word for dove (columba).

The Columbarium lies inside the Council’s Grade II Listed non-conformist Chapel, one of a pair of listed Victorian Chapels at the Fairmile Cemetery and comprises hand-crafted hardwood cabinets holding glass-fronted niches.  Each niche has its own soft interior lighting.  There is a designated seating area in the Chapel for quiet contemplation.

Ashes from any denomination of the Christian faith, or other faiths, can be placed here. Henley Town Council’s Columbarium meets the needs of families who would prefer to have the ashes of their loved ones rest in a visible and sheltered niche rather than in the main cemetery or elsewhere.

Niches are of varying sizes and can accommodate up to 4 urns. They can be leased for a 20-year period.  This lease can be renewed at the end of its term.

The cost of a single niche, for a period of 20 years is £1,300 and £1,800 for a larger niche (including VAT). For non-Henley residents there is a sliding scale of up to three times these charges.

This is in line with our policy for all burials at the Fairmile Cemetery.  Copies of the lease agreement, the Columbarium rules and regulations and the general regulations for the Fairmile Cemetery can be found here.

Expressions of interest can be sent to our Cemetery Administrator at cemetery@henleytowncouncil.gov.uk or phoning 07724 837604 who will pass your request on to the cemetery administrator to return your call. Lease agreements are made directly with the Town Council.
