Henley Town Council and Leander Club will host a busy programme of celebrations for 23 Olympians and Paralympians
The day will begin with a media reception and breakfast at Leander Club from 9.30am
Peter O Hanlon, who is coordinating the Heroes’ Return with Henley Town Council, will recount Team GB’s achievements during the morning reception. Afterwards, some of the athletes will head out on the water for a ‘row past’ heading towards the River & Rowing Museum and then to Upper Thames Rowing Club. If conditions are favourable, Peter, who covered the Tokyo Olympics, may even set up some ‘mini-races’. The crews will return to Leander by 11:15 am.
Once off the water, the athletes will board an open-top bus. They will leave Leander Club at approximately 11:25am and take a tour of the town via Hart Street, Bell Street, New Street, Thameside North and Hart Street arriving at the town hall at around 12:10am.
The Mayor of Henley, Councillor Sarah Miller, and Leander Club captain Jack Beaumont, who won silver in the men’s quadruple sculls in Tokyo, will give speeches on the steps of the town hall.
Local clubs, led by Henley Rowing Club, will form an archway of oars for the returning athletes. The Olympians and Paralympians will then meet and greet the public in the Market Place, posing for photos and signing photographs for fans until 1pm. Flags, chocolate medals and Leander Club Hippos will also be distributed.
The athletes will then head back to Leander Club for a reception with club members and their guests. They will be joined by the Mayor of Henley, Councillor Sarah Miller.
Market Place will be closed from 9am-3pm. There will be a rolling road closure of Hart Street, Bell Street, New Street and Thameside North from 11:15-12:30pm. Kings Road will also be made one way in a northerly direction for vehicular traffic between its junction with Market Place and the southern junction with the Grey’s Road Car Park between 11:15 am – 13:10 pm
