Silver Gilt for Henley in the 2011 Regional in Bloom Awards

Henley wins a Silver Gilt in the Thames and Chiltern Regional in Bloom Awards and overall category winner.

Every year we look to an event that we can celebrate in flowers and to make use of the circular flower beds at Mill Meadows.  There seemed to be nothing special for 2011 until the announcement of the wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton.  An ideal opportunity now presented itself!  The beds were completely stripped of the roses (they have been heeled in on some spare land to use for later on) and reduced the size of the retaining raised beds to make two circles.  The "wedding cake" was to take shape!  There has been lots of interest and it has been great fun to listen to peoples comments.

Gardening Buddies are now very much part of the volunteer scene in Henley.  There is always plenty to do around the town and once again 4,000 crocus were planted which together with the previous 16,000 create a wonderful visual display to the pleasure of residents.  We did encounter a bit of problem this year when a builder left rubble on top of one of the crocus areas.  There was a great outcry and volunteers removed it and took it to the roadway outside a local church and filled in the potholes.  Recycling at its best!

Apart from the on-going projects this year we have also taken on the Henley Youth Centre in an attemtpt to make the outside areas more appealing.  This has gone very well and Phase I is complete and ideas for  Phase II are being formed.  The Centre is under threat with its funding having been cut completely and the town is determined that it should be kept open and Gardening Buddies felt this was a good project in order that we could make our contribution.

We have been tackling the litter problem once again and this year, after two years in the planning, the Oxfordshire Waste Partnership (Partners are Henley Town Council and South Oxfordshire district Council) have provided five recycling bins and they have been placed in strategic areas around the town.  These bins have made quite a difference in certain areas and the idea of recycling seems to be working.  We are hoping therefore to encourage the Partnership to purchase some more.

Our Plant Swap/Sale was once again an enormous success with a record amount being raised.  Henley in Transition have also been very busy and by 2012 the Henley Orchard will have been planted alongside the Woodland Memorial Forest.

The culmination of our year is always the Award Ceremony in October when we celebrate the front and back gardens and restaurants and pubs of Henley.
