The Henley in Bloom committee have been really busy this year; not only making sure the town is looking colourful but also spending a lot of time raising funds to maintain the high standard of previous years.
Main sponsorship has been raised from Toad Hall Garden Centre and Pier24/ICON for this year's entry. Both Martyn Sheldrake and Samir Khan have been heavily involved in helping us create an environment to be proud of.
The triple planters in the Market Place look magnificent, the flowering baskets are truly amazing and the perfume from the flowers is quite heady, the Phillimore Fountain is vastly improved from an area that was hidden away to one which people now notice and take interest in; the newly christened "Henley Standard" boat on the Reading Road roundabout has been freshened up and great enthusiasm has been shown from the Lions in creating the "Wishing Well" garden.
Gardening Buddies has been formed to assist with regular staff in keeping flower beds weed free. Come and join us. An hour here and there makes an enormous difference.
Valley Road School entry in the Mark Mattock Challenge Cup meant a lot of hard work for staff and pupils alike.. Their caretaker, Dave Thatcher, led their bid to do well and their wildlife pond is an inspiration. It was also wonderful to see their new "Welcome to Valley Road School" garden and we will hear in September as to whether they have been successful. These pupils were very proud of their school and this shone through when the Judges visited in July.
Henley in Bloom meets throughout the year. We do not have time off! We are always looking for projects and at the moment Station Park and a Garden with disabled access is focusing our minds. Please contact the Town Hall if you would like to be involved.
Whilst summer is here take advantage and visit Mill Meadows.
Following extensive refurbishmentof the Phillimore Fountain a re-opening ceremony took place on 15 May 2008, attended by Lord Phillimore and Mr Mike Sweeney, Henley Royal Regatta, who kindly sponsored the renovations.
